A busy week or two in Chicago tech news (May 26 edition)

This post recaps the best in recent, tech-flavored Chicago news. These links are culled from our ChicagoBits and TechBits sections. If you like this sorta thang, get the feed of ChicagoBits/TechBits. And if we missed a good link, suggest it to us.

  1. The rumored Google acquision of FeedBurner looks like it’s gonna happen. TechCrunch confirmed the deal on May 23 after a few weeks of speculation. There’s no official announcement yet.
  2. Chicago was the beneficiary of some cool cash from the Knight Foundation. Adrian Holovaty (ChicagoCrime, Lawrence.com, Django, Washington Post) scored $1.1 million to lauch a new hyperlocal startup called EveryBlock. The Chi-Town Daily News picked up $340k. If you have drinks with Adrian, make him pick up the tab.
  3. Ron May claimed Motorola plans to lay off 7500 employees “officially” and 10,000 “unofficially.” I’m not sure how you “unofficially” lay someone off (did that happen to Milton in Office Space?), but a report from the Daily Herald backs ol’ Ron, claiming 7000. Weighing the two sources, I’ll go with the 7000 figure.
  4. Chicago’s Menuism was recognized in the Web 2.0 Awards, earning an honorable mention right alongside Google Local and Live.com local. Nicely done.
  5. Finally, Chicago Public Radio announced plans for a new station called “:Vocalo” (no, that is not a stray colon, it’s intentional), set to launch June 4. The station will focus on NW Indiana and Chicago culture and music. Just a thought: NW Indiana may take a back seat.
